People who know me, know I am a reader. I don’t make that statement lightly–I read a lot. And I love books. Over the past few years, I have slowed my acquisitiveness and instead spend most of my time at the library. We have a great library here in Duncan, and even before I started working at the Genealogy Branch, everyone knew me; it was always like being greeted by friends. I am taking a long way around to explain this blog. I have been asked if I would write reviews of books I have read. While I did do a review last week of Esther Safran Foer’s book–I Want You To Know We Are Still Here and included it on this site. I did so because it was a memoir based on genealogy and history.
I read a great deal of historical fiction, but I also read, well, almost anything. On this page, I will keep posting my books that I feel you as genealogists will enjoy, and on the Duncan Library Page, I will review anything else I think you might be interested in reading.
That being said, there are two series that the Duncan public library has that I think are absolutely fantastic and encompass time periods which are chaotic and strife-ridden–Jacqueline Winspear’s Maisie Dobbs series which starts after WWI but includes pre-WWI events, and Susan Elia MacNeal’s Maggie Hope series, which starts in the 1930s and continues through WWII. Both of these authors are fantastic. The characters are well-developed and the time periods are well-researched. When I read these books I get a sense of the time and people and events. I highly recommend both series to lovers of historical fiction.
